A genus of the family Peridiniaceae in the class Dinoflagellates, it has a unicellular body with armored plates, and is characterized by the fact that the left side of the lateral groove is lower than the right side when viewed from the ventral surface. It has two flagella, a lateral flagellum that follows the lateral groove in a coiled manner and a longitudinal flagellum that extends backward from the longitudinal groove, and swims by rotating its body, living as plankton. When environmental conditions are good, it multiplies asexually by diagonal binary fission, but when conditions deteriorate, it sinks to the seafloor and forms a thick-walled cyst. When the environment improves, the cysts germinate and release swimming cells with armored plates. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
