American film director. Born in New York. Entered the film industry as a stuntman and actor. Gained acclaim as a director with The Thief of Bagdad (1924) starring Douglas Fairbanks. A skilled director capable of handling a wide range of subjects, he produced many works. His representative works include two gangster films starring J. Cagney, He's the King's Man (1939) and White Heat (1949), High Sierra (1940) in which H. Bogart played a fugitive, the boxing film Iron Arm Jim (1942), the western Chase (1947), and The Naked and the Dead (1958), based on a novel by N. Mailer.
