Ozonolysis

Ozonolysis

When ozone is applied to an alkene in an inert solvent such as hexane at room temperature or low temperature, a compound called an ozonide is produced through a complex process. Ozonides are not stable, and when zinc dust is applied to them in acetic acid, they decompose to give carbonyl compounds. In this way, by applying ozone to an alkene and treating the ozonide produced, it is possible to obtain carbonyl compounds by oxidatively cleaving the double bond of the alkene. This process is called ozonolysis ( Figure ).

Thus, ozonolysis has been used to split large molecules containing unsaturated bonds into smaller components, and in particular to determine the structure of unknown alkenes by identifying these smaller carbonyl compounds.
