Conversion literature

Literature with the theme of conversion, in which a writer who was rooted in communism or socialism abandons his or her beliefs or moves to a position free from oppression due to the intervention of authorities. Works written by writers who have had such experiences are also sometimes called conversion literature.

In June 1933 (Showa 8), the leaders of the Communist Party at the time, Sano Manabu and Nabeyama Sadachika (1901-79), published from prison a "Letter to Co-Defendants," a so-called "Statement of Conversion," which essentially declared their renunciation of Communism. Following this, the majority of those accused under the Peace Preservation Law, both pretrial and convicted, followed suit and declared their intention to renounce communism, and from around the spring of 1934, they were released on bail one after another. Literature written by writers who had experienced these conversions, as well as works that took their own experiences of conversion as their subject matter, were welcomed enthusiastically by the journalism of the time, and, as the flip side of the so-called Literary Renaissance, they dominated the literary scene around 1935. Among these, Murayama Tomoyoshi's "White Night," Tateno Nobuyuki's "Friendship," Kubokawa Tsurujiro's "Storm and Clouds," and Tokunaga Sunao's "Winter Withering," published in 1934, are works in the style of autobiographical novels that confess the anguish of conscience caused by the oppression of the authorities. Shimaki Kensaku's works, published from that year to the following year, from "Leprosy" to "Reconstruction" (Shimaki would later complete his conversion with "Searching for Life"), and Nakano Shigeharu's series beginning with "Chapter One" and including "The Village House," are works in which, even after taking a step back, there is still a hidden search for a comeback, and both clearly demonstrate the phase of early conversion literature. In addition, decadent literature from the 1930s, such as Takami Jun's Kokyu Wasurete Beki (We Mustn't Forget About It), published in 1935-36, can also be seen as one phase of conversion literature. In addition, when we consider the cases of Takeda Rintaro's immersion in the everyday life of the common people, Honjo Mutsuo's retrospective into the historical dimension, Kamei Katsuichiro's self-renewal into the world of religion and classics, and the cases of converted writers who leaned toward fascism during the war, we can say that the various phases of conversion literature, which reflect the various stages from forced conversion to a voluntary conversion with a change in quality, were deeply involved in the overall literary situation in the 1930s. After World War II, the issue of conversion was raised again in the process of the pursuit of war responsibility by members of the "Modern Literature" group.
