This ancient Greek town was located on a hill about 100 meters above the Messara plain in the center of the south coast of Crete. Mount Ida, said to be the birthplace of Zeus, can be seen in the distance to the northwest. Excavations began in 1900 by the Italian Federico Halbughel, and ruins such as the remains of a palace representative of the Cretan civilization have been discovered.
