A faunal region. It is home to many species of monotremes and marsupials, but few higher placental species. Its endemic species include the kangaroo, platypus, koala, cassowary, and kiwi. Marsupials once flourished on other continents, but are thought to have become almost extinct with the emergence of placental species. The Australian Region was separated from other continents during the Paleogene, which is why it was able to survive. It is separated from the Oriental Region by Wallace's Line, which runs between Bali and Lombok, and between Sulawesi (Celebes) and Borneo.

動物区の一つ。単孔類，有袋類を多種産し，これより高等な有胎盤類はほとんど産しない。特産種としてカンガルー，カモノハシ，コアラ，ヒクイドリ，キーウィなどがある。有袋類は古くはほかの大陸でも栄えていたが，有胎盤類の出現によりほとんど滅んだと考えられる。オーストラリア区は古第三紀頃に他大陸と分離したので，その残存が可能であったとされる。バリ島―ロンボク島間，スラウェシ島（セレベス島）―ボルネオ島間を通るウォレス線により東洋区と分けられる。
