A type of market in Korea, it does not have any special facilities such as permanent stores, but is a place where peddlers and nearby farmers gather regularly to exchange goods. In Korean, it is called changsi. It is also simply called jiang. Historical documents from the Goryeo period show the name "hyangshi," which is thought to have been set up at important transportation points, but it was not until the Joseon Dynasty that jiangshi began to be organized, and spread nationwide in the late Joseon period. Jiangshi in the Joseon period began when King Taejo Yi Seong-gye concentrated markets in Seoul in specific locations, and by the 15th century jiangshi had appeared in areas other than Seoul.
