Takinosuke Yamamoto

Japanese:
Takinosuke Yamamoto

A social educator from the Meiji to early Showa periods. He advocated and promoted the Youth Association (Youth Association) movement. Born on November 15, 1873 in Kusabuka Village, Numakuma County, Hiroshima Prefecture (now Fukuyama City). After graduating from elementary school, he worked as an elementary school teacher and other positions, while in 1890 (Meiji 23), he formed the "Kouyukai" (Friends Association) with volunteer young people from the village and started the Youth Association movement. In 1896, he self-published "Countryside Youth," and through his writings and lectures, he advocated the establishment of a Youth Association with the aim of raising awareness and improving rural youth to compete with students and other urban youth. He sought to improve the entertainment-centered nature of previous rural youth organizations such as "Wakarenchu," and to contribute to improving customs and promoting practical morality through evening meetings, agricultural studies, joint work, and athletic meets organized by the Youth Association. These activities and opinions were in line with the policy of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education at the time to integrate rural youth, and encouraged the formation of youth groups in various regions and the Greater Japan Federation of Youth Associations in 1925 (Taisho 14).
