Tang Shunzhi

A Chinese man of letters in the mid-Ming dynasty. His pen name was Outoku and his pen name was Jingchuan. He was from Wujin (Jiangsu Province). In 1529 (8th year of the Jiajing era), he passed the examination with the highest score. He was known for his contributions to the defense against Japanese pirates, and was promoted to the positions of Right Censor and Fengyang Governor. He was a man of great learning, well versed in astronomy, geography, music, military strategy, and mathematics, and compiled ancient and modern documents by content, writing six volumes: Left, Right, Literature, Military, Confucianism, and Military Studies. He studied the theory of innate knowledge under Wang Yangming's disciple Wang Ji, and as a prose writer, he initially produced prose that imitated the Seven Masters of the Pseudo-Classical Literature School, but later came to realization and was praised as a classical literary scholar alongside Wang Shenzhong, Mao Kun, and Gui Youguang. His poetry and prose collections include "Jingchuan Sensei Bunshu" and "Gaishu" (Japanese edition: "Tang Jingchuan Bunsui").

中国、明(みん)代中期の文学者。字(あざな)は応徳(おうとく)、号は荊川(けいせん)。武進（江蘇(こうそ)省）の人。1529年（嘉靖8）会試首席合格。倭寇(わこう)防御に功あり、官は右僉都御史(ゆうせんとぎょし)、鳳陽巡撫(ほうようじゅんぶ)に至った。学識博大で天文、地理、音楽、兵法、数学にまで通じ、古今の文献を内容別に編集し、左、右、文、武、儒、稗(ひ)の六編を著した。王陽明の弟子王畿(おうき)に良知説を学び、散文家としては、初め偽古文派七子(しちし)に倣った文を制作したが、のち悟って古文家として王慎中(おうしんちゅう)、茅坤(ぼうこん)、帰有光(きゆうこう)らと並称された。詩文集『荊川先生文集』『外集』（和刻『唐荊川文粋』）などがある。
