Ancient style poetry (English: gǔ tǐ shī)

Japanese: 古体詩 - こたいし（英語表記）gǔ tǐ shī

A type of Chinese poetry. It corresponds to modern poetry, which consists of regulated verse and quatrain, and consists of ancient poetry and gafu. It follows an old style that existed before the Tang Dynasty, and apart from rhyming in even numbers of lines, there are no restrictions on rhythm or number of lines, making it suitable for freely expressing ideas and emotions. Each line is made up of four, five, or seven lines, but there are also long and short lines that combine these. A type of rhyme may be used throughout the entire poem, but it is not uncommon for long poems to change rhyme in the middle.

中国，漢詩の詩型の一種。律詩と絶句からなる今(近)体詩に対応し，古詩と楽府（がふ）からなる。唐以前から存した古い形式にのっとるもので，偶数句で押韻する以外は，平仄（ひようそく）や句数の制約を受けることがなく，自由に思想･感情を表現するのに適している。各句は四言，五言，七言から構成されるが，それらをとりあわせた長短句もある。押韻は一種の韻を全編にわたって用いることもあるが，長い詩では途中で換韻することも珍しくない。
