Insurance to compensate for damages incurred by ships (the ship itself and its equipment) due to accidents such as sinking, stranding, fire, collision, etc. during a voyage. Along with cargo insurance, it is one of the major types of marine insurance. The ships referred to here include passenger ships, cargo ships, fishing boats, dredgers, and crane ships, and in addition to the hulls of these ships, engines, equipment, fuel, food, and other consumables are also insured. There is also construction insurance for ships under construction. The contract holder for construction insurance is the shipyard, but the insurance covers ships under construction owned by the shipyard and the building materials for the ships, as well as materials supplied by the shipowner. Insurance is usually taken out from the time of laying the keel or launching, and the risks covered are quite wide-ranging, both on land and at sea, including fire, flood, capsizing, sinking during launching, stranding, and collision. The insured value is generally not less than the value of the shipbuilding contract. In addition, the Commercial Code contains specific provisions regarding the insured value of hull insurance (Article 818), the insurance period (Article 821), and the insurer's statutory exemptions (Article 829).

船舶 (船舶自体および属具) につき生じた航海上の沈没，座礁，座州，火災，衝突などの偶然の事故によってこうむる損害の填補を目的とする保険。貨物海上保険 (積荷保険) とともに海上保険のなかで主要な位置を占める。ここでいう船舶とは，客船，貨物船，漁船，浚渫船，起重機船などをさし，これらの船体のほかに機関，属具，燃料，食料品，その他の消耗品なども保険の対象とする。また建造中の船舶については建造保険がある。建造保険の契約者は造船所であるが，保険の目的には造船所所有の建造中の船舶と当該船舶の建造材料のほか船主支給による資材をも含む。通常，起工または進水の時点から付保され，担保する危険は火災，洪水，転覆や進水時における沈没，座礁，衝突など海陸両面にわたってかなり広範囲である。保険価額は造船契約価額を下回らないのが一般的である。なお商法は船舶保険の保険価額 (818条) ，保険期間 (821条) ，保険者の法定免責事項 (829条) などにつき特に規定を設けている。
