Gaya (English spelling)

Japanese: ガヤー(英語表記)Gayā
Gaya (English spelling)
A city in the mid-west of Bihar, northeast India. It is located about 88 km south of Patna, in the transitional zone between the Ganges River plain and the Chotanagpur plateau, surrounded by low rocky mountains, and the heat is intense. Most of the city stretches on a long, narrow bank on the eastern bank of a tributary of the Ganges, and is densely packed with houses, but the new city built by the British during the colonial period has government offices and trading companies lined up in an orderly fashion. There are many temples and holy sites in and around the city, including the Hindu Vishnupad Temple, the Buddhist Brahmajuni (Gayasirsa) Temple, and Bodh Gaya, 10 km south. 300,000 Hindus alone visit Gaya every year. Rice, wheat, and sugarcane are collected and distributed in the surrounding area, and metalwork, porcelain, paint, and paper are manufactured here. There is a college of Magadha University in Bodh Gaya. Population: 291,220 (1991).
