... During the Portuguese Salazar regime (1932-68), ties with the mother country were strengthened, and in 1951 the colony was renamed an overseas province and incorporated into the mother country. The colony was actively planned for settlement and developed resources, while the majority of the products were exported to the mother country, and the integration of the mother country and the colony progressed. In response to this colonial rule, the liberation struggle split into three factions: the socialist Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, founded in 1956) led by Antônio Agostinho Neto, the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA, founded in 1962) led by H. Roberto, who advocated Congolese tribalism and anti-communism in the north, and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA, founded in 1966) led by J. Savimbi, who also advocated Obimbundu tribalism and anti-communism in the central and southern parts of the country and split off from the FNLA, and these factions continued to fight fiercely. The liberation struggle entered a new phase with the military coup in the mother country in April 1974. ...
