1785‐1859 English writer. He led a free and easy life from a young age, and after entering Oxford University, he became fascinated with opium smoking and left without earning a degree. He was close friends with Romantic writers such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Charles Lamb, and wrote memoirs about them. After publishing "Confessions of an Opium-Taker" in the "London Magazine" in 1821, he published many essays that attracted attention. "An English Mail Coach" (1849) is still widely read today due to its gorgeous writing style, and "On the Knocking Scene in Macbeth" (1823) occupies an important place in the history of Shakespeare criticism due to its sharp psychological insight.
