Princeton University - Princeton Daigaku (English spelling) Princeton University
A non-denominational, coeducational private university in Princeton, New Jersey, United States. It is one of the Ivy League universities. Until 1969, it was a men's only university. Based on a decision made at a meeting of the Presbyterian Church held in Philadelphia in 1739, a movement to establish a university in the Middle Colonies was started, and in 1746 the governor's approval was obtained, and the College of New Jersey was established in Elizabeth the following year in 1747. In 1848, it moved to Newark, and in 1854 it was decided to move to Princeton, and in 1856 Nassau Hall was completed. In 1896, it was renamed Princeton University, and its basic concept for university education was to avoid development as a specialized educational institution, to encourage pure scholarship, and to place emphasis on liberal education that would serve as the foundation for specialized and technical education and give it breadth. The university has played a pioneering role in many aspects of university education, including the introduction of the Supervising Professorship in 1905, the Independent Research Program in 1932, the training of public affairs specialists in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, the training of engineers with a broad cultural education in the School of Technology and Applied Sciences, the Inter-Faculty Joint Research Program and the founding of the Committee on Humanities as a result of it (1953), etc. The faculty has about 700 faculty members and 6,300 students (1997).
