A city in the central state of Jalisco in southwestern Mexico. It is located about 70 km southeast of the state capital Guadalajara, near the northeastern shore of Lake Chapala, where the Sula (Atotonilco) River joins the Santiago River, which flows out of the lake. It is the largest city in the lake area, and its main industries are manufacturing, agriculture, fishing, and poultry farming. Tourism is also important, as it is a base for tourists to Lake Chapala, with a railroad and road connecting Mexico City and Guadalajara passing through the city. Population: 69,559 (1990 estimate).
