Yakushiji Temple

Japanese: 薬師寺 - やくしじ
Yakushiji Temple
[1] A temple located in Minamikawachi-cho, Kawachi-gun, Tochigi Prefecture. It is said to have been founded by Emperor Tenmu. It had a Kaidan-in temple, and monks from ten provinces in the Kanto region were ordained there. It was said to be one of the three Kaidan temples in Japan, along with Todai- ji and Kanzeon-ji . Gyōshin and Dōkyō were exiled. It later fell into ruin, and was restored by Ryōken in 1262. In 1339, Ashikaga Takauji renamed it Ankoku-ji. Since 1880 , it has been a Shingon sect Chizan-ha temple. Shimotsuke Yakushi-ji. [2] The head temple of the Hosso sect in Nishinokyo-cho, Nara City. It was built in the 9th year of the reign of Emperor Tenmu ( 680 ) to pray for the recovery of the empress (later Empress Jitō), and was completed in 698 , the 2nd year of the reign of Emperor Mommu. It was first built in Asuka, but was later moved to Fujiwara-kyo, and then moved to its current location in 718 when the capital was moved to Heijo-kyo. The original temple is called Hon-Yakushi-ji. It is said that the original temple buildings were modeled after the Dragon Palace, and its layout is called Yakushi-ji style. In 973 , everything except the main hall and tower was burned down, and it was soon rebuilt, but due to repeated disasters, only the eastern tower and eastern temple hall remain. The eastern tower has a three-story mokoshi (a formal dressing staircase) and is a national treasure, along with the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai, the two attendant statues (Yakushi Triad), the standing statue of Kannon Bodhisattva, the hemp cloth-painted Kisshoten statue, and the Buddha's footprint stone. The main hall was rebuilt in 1976, and the western tower in 1980, based on their original form.
