...Liam O'Flaherty (1896-1984) wrote many novels and short stories, such as "The Informer" (1925), which depicts betrayal and violence in a turbulent city, "Skerret" (1932), which is set in his hometown of the Aran Islands and depicts the downfall of a teacher named Skerrett who rebels against the priest, and "Famine" (1937), which depicts the life and disintegration of a rural family in the 1840s. Frank O'Connor (1903-66) wrote a collection of short stories, "The National Guest" (1931), which deals with a tragedy during the anti-British conflict, and his novels, "The Saint and Mary Kate" (1932) and "Dutch Genre Paintings" (1940), which depict young men and women trapped by the customs of a small provincial town. Sean O'Faolain (1900-91) gained attention for his collection of short stories, Midsummer Night's Madness (1932), which dealt with events from a turbulent time.
