Japanese: すり鉢(擂鉢) - すりばち

A cooking utensil used in combination with a pestle to grind food. It is a large-mouthed funnel-shaped ceramic vessel with fine vertical notches (graters) on the inside wall. Food is placed inside and the pestle is rotated to grind it over the notches. It is also called a mortar bowl or a mortar and is also called a mortar and pestle. A pestle is also called a suriki, and is written as 'mikoki', 'surikoki', 'suribachi', etc. The word 'suribachi' was found in the Song dynasty in China, and in Japan it appears as 'mikoki' in the entry for January 6, 1179 (Jisho 3), in the Sankaiki, but it was not until the late Muromachi period that the names mortar bowl and pestle began to appear frequently.

すりこ木との組合せで，食品の磨砕などに用いる調理具。口の大きな漏斗状の陶器で，内壁にこまかい縦の刻み目(おろし目)を一面に施し，中に食品を入れ，すりこ木を回転させて刻み目の上ですりつぶす。すりこ鉢，カガツともいい〈擂盆（らいばん）〉などとも呼ぶ。すりこ木はすり木とも呼び，〈磨粉木〉〈摺粉木〉〈擂槌〉などとも書く。〈擂槌〉の語は中国宋代に見られ，日本では《山槐記》治承3年(1179)1月6日条に〈摩粉木〉と見えるが，すり鉢，すりこ木の名が頻繁に見られるようになるのは室町後期のことになる。
