Located in northern Iraq, this is Iraq's largest oil field. It was discovered in 1927 by the Turkish Oil Company (later Iraqi Oil Company). Production began in earnest after the Kirkuk-Ceyhan Pipeline was completed in 1934 to Ceyhan on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. In 1979, oil production reached 1.42 million barrels per day. After the 2003 Iraq War, the Kirkuk-Ceyhan Pipeline was barely functioning due to terrorist attacks, and the "strategic pipeline" to the Persian Gulf has also barely functioned since the Gulf War. In 2009, the Iraqi government held a bidding for development rights in an effort to increase domestic oil production, and Royal Dutch Shell submitted a bid for the Kirkuk oil field, but they were unable to reach an agreement on the price.
