Nagpur (English spelling)
A commercial and industrial city in the northeastern part of Maharashtra, western India. It is located on the Nag River. It was founded by a Gond king in the early 18th century, and in the mid-18th century it became the ruling base of the Bhonsle family, a powerful member of the Maratha Confederacy. It came under British rule in 1853 and became the base of British rule in central India. It is a major transportation hub connecting the Ganges Plain with the Deccan Plateau and the Arabian Coast with the Bay of Bengal. The surrounding area is a major center of the cotton textile industry, with cotton and other crops being cultivated there. Other industries include printing, foundry, flour milling, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, glass, leather, and food processing. There are a large state-run livestock and poultry farm, and many colleges, including Nagpur University. Sitabuldi Fort (1818) stands on a nearby hill. Population: 1,622,225 (1991).

インド西部,マハーラーシュトラ州北東部の商工業都市。ナーグ川沿岸に位置。 18世紀初期にゴンド朝の王によって建設され,中期にマラータ同盟の有力な一員ボンスレー家の支配根拠地となった。 1853年イギリス支配下に入り,インド中部におけるイギリス支配の拠点となった。ガンジス平原-デカン高原,アラビア海岸-ベンガル湾岸を結ぶ交通の一大要地。周辺はワタなどの栽培が盛んで,綿織物工業の大中心地。ほかに印刷,鋳造,製粉,薬品,陶磁器,ガラス,皮革,食品加工などの工業がある。州立の広大な家畜・家禽飼育場,ナーグプル大学はじめ多数の単科大学がある。付近の丘陵上にシタバルディ城 (1818) がある。人口 162万 2225 (1991) 。
