〘名〙① 仕出し屋が大きな台に載せて遊女屋に運んだ豪華な料理。松竹梅などの飾りをつけた、台の物のうち、一番上等なもの。※洒落本・当世気どり草(1773)「大台の造り松は枝をさかへて五尺間口へはびこり」② 転じて、大げさに言ったりすること。※大つごもり(1894)〈樋口一葉〉上「割木(わりき)ほどの事も大台(オホダイ)にして叱りとばさるる婢女(はしだ)の身つらや」③ 株式市場で一〇円を単位とする値段の区切りを「台」というのに対し、一〇〇円を単位とする値段の区切りを示した呼称。今日では一般的に一〇〇〇円もしくは一〇〇〇〇円を単位とする。④ 大きな境目となる金額や数量。
