Japanese: 大台 - おおだい

〘noun〙① A sumptuous meal served on a large tray by a caterer to a brothel. The most luxurious of the trays, decorated with pine, bamboo, plum, and other ornaments. ※Sharebon Tose Kidorigusa (1773) "The pine trees on the large tray stretch out over the entrance, their branches hanging up." ② By extension, to say something exaggerated. ※Otsugomori (1894) Higuchi Ichiyo, Vol. 1 "How tragic for a maid to be scolded and thrown away by the large tray for something as trivial as splitting a log. " ③ In the stock market, a "dai " is a price division in units of 100 yen, whereas this is a term used to refer to a price division in units of 100 yen. Today, the units are generally 1,000 yen or 10,000 yen. ④ A large amount or quantity that marks a large boundary.

〘名〙① 仕出し屋が大きな台に載せて遊女屋に運んだ豪華な料理。松竹梅などの飾りをつけた、台の物のうち、一番上等なもの。※洒落本・当世気どり草（1773）「大台の造り松は枝をさかへて五尺間口へはびこり」② 転じて、大げさに言ったりすること。※大つごもり（1894）〈樋口一葉〉上「割木(わりき)ほどの事も大台(オホダイ)にして叱りとばさるる婢女(はしだ)の身つらや」③ 株式市場で一〇円を単位とする値段の区切りを「台」というのに対し、一〇〇円を単位とする値段の区切りを示した呼称。今日では一般的に一〇〇〇円もしくは一〇〇〇〇円を単位とする。④ 大きな境目となる金額や数量。
