A town in Kawanuma County in the western part of the Aizu Basin in western Fukushima Prefecture. The town center, Sakashita, developed on a terrace on the left bank of the Tsurunuma River. It was a former post town on the Echigo Kaido road, and is served by the Tadami Line and the Ban'etsu Expressway. It has extensive rice paddies, and produces tobacco, apples, asparagus, and tomatoes. A rice bale-pulling ceremony is held on January 14th. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 91.59 km2 . 17,360 people (2010). 福島県西部,会津盆地西部の河沼(かわぬま)郡の町。中心街の坂下は鶴沼川左岸の段丘上に発達,越後街道の旧宿場町で,只見線,磐越(ばんえつ)自動車道が通じる。水田が広く,タバコ,リンゴ,アスパラガス,トマトなども産する。正月14日に米俵引き行事が行われる。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。91.59km2。1万7360人(2010)。
