A dance performance by the geisha ensemble of Pontocho, Kyoto. In spring, the dance festivals of Kyoto's geisha district begin all at once, and the Kamogawa Odori is one of the most representative, along with the Miyako Odori. Founded in 1872 (Meiji 5), the choreography was done by the Shinozuka school, which incorporated elements of Kōwakamai and Kabuki dance and established a school of its own. New and innovative dances were performed by Nakanishi Choji (playwright and theater critic, 1875-1937), Yamagishi Kayo (novelist, 1876-1945), Hayashi Teizō (stage designer, 1911-78), and others, and the tradition remains to this day.
