A general name for a group of minerals used as a raw material for ceramics. Mineralogically, it is composed of fine grains of quartz and muscovite, and may contain pyrite, kaolinite, halloysite (a type of kaolin), etc. In Japan, it is a product of shallow hydrothermal alteration from the Miocene epoch of the Neogene period onwards, and is mostly made from acidic volcanic rocks, pyroclastic rocks, sandstone, mudstone, etc., and is mined as a raw material for ceramics and refractory materials. There are many large deposits in western Japan, including the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture and the Amakusa region in Kumamoto Prefecture.
