Chiezo Kataoka

Film actor. Real name Ueki Masayoshi. Born in Gunma Prefecture. At the age of nine, he joined the Kataoka Children's Theater, led by the 11th Kataoka Nizaemon, and later became a kabuki actor under the stage name Kataoka Chieizō. In 1927 (Showa 2), he joined Makino Productions, changed his name to Chieizō, and made his debut in "Banka Jigoku" (Hell of Flowers), from which he gained popularity as a handsome star. The following year, he founded Kataoka Chieizō Productions (disbanded in 1937), and worked with directors Itami Mansaku and Inagaki Hiroshi, producing masterpieces that remain in the history of period films, such as "Mother of the Eyelids" and "Ippon-to Dohyō-iri" (1931), "Kokushi Musou" (1932), and "Akanishi Kakita" (1936). After World War II, he was active in entertainment films such as the "Tarao Bannai" series starting with "Seven Faces" and the "Judge" series starting with "Irezumi Hangan," while also showing dignified performances in director Uchida Tomu's "Chiyari Fuji" (1955) and the "Daibosatsu Toge" trilogy (1957-59).

映画俳優。本名植木正義。群馬県生まれ。9歳で11世片岡仁左衛門(にざえもん)主宰の片岡少年劇に入り、のち片岡千栄蔵の芸名で歌舞伎(かぶき)俳優となる。1927年（昭和2）マキノプロへ入社、千恵蔵と改名して『万花地獄』でデビュー、以来美男スターとして人気を獲得した。翌年、片岡千恵蔵プロダクションを創設（1937解散）、伊丹万作(いたみまんさく)、稲垣浩(ひろし)らの監督と組み、『瞼(まぶた)の母』『一本刀土俵入』（1931）、『国士無双』（1932）、『赤西蠣太(かきた)』（1936）など、時代劇映画史に残る佳作を生んだ。第二次世界大戦後は、『七つの顔』に始まる「多羅尾伴内(たらおばんない)」シリーズ、『いれずみ判官』に始まる「判官」シリーズなど娯楽映画に活躍する一方、内田吐夢(とむ)監督の『血槍(ちやり)富士』（1955）、『大菩薩(だいぼさつ)峠』三部作（1957～59）などに風格ある演技をみせた。
