For example, in the case of a panel painting from the 1400s, in addition to stylistic identification, the region of production is identified based on the type of panel used, and analysis of the canvas, pigments, brushstrokes, etc. are also important. These results are put into a form and signed by an expert, which is called an "expertise." The nature of these varies from memorandums that merely state very personal opinions to those that have a certain degree of legal validity. As in Japan, the West does not have a system of experts certified by national exams like those for doctors and lawyers, but in individual cases, temporary legal experts certified by the court may exist.
