Like tragedy, comedy also began as an adaptation of Greek drama. Plautus and Terence wrote comedies called "fabula palliata" ("wearing a Greek cloak") based on the works of Greek New Comedy by Menander, Diphyllus, and Philemon. Plautus was born in a small city in Umbria around 254 BCE, and after working as an actor he turned to playwriting. He wrote 130 comedies, but only 20 remain today.
