In 1929, the first oil well was drilled in the western foothills of the Middle Urals, and in 1932, successful exploratory drilling was carried out in Ishimbai (Republic of Bashkortostan), which is now the center of the Volga-Ural oil fields. Production then increased rapidly during World War II. By 1956, it accounted for 63% of the total oil production in the Soviet Union. …
