A large moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Saturniidae. It is a large species with a wing span of 70 to 100 mm. Both the front and back wings have large transparent patterns, and the base color of the male is reddish brown, while the female is yellow. The male's wings are longer and thinner, and the top of the forewings protrudes. The larvae hatch in spring and feed on beech plants such as Quercus acutissima and Quercus serrata, as well as the leaves of cherry and zelkova trees. They mature and make cocoons in June, in which they pupate. The cocoons are green and shaped like a horse mackerel, and hang from twigs by a long stalk, so they are commonly called Yamakamasu or Tsurikamasu. The color of the cocoon does not change much, so in winter, after the leaves have fallen, the cocoons of the larvae's shells are noticeable. The adults emerge in late autumn and often fly to lights. The females lay eggs in the cocoons or on nearby branches. They overwinter as eggs. They are widely distributed throughout mainland Japan, living in plains and mountains.
