Salome (English spelling)

Salome (English spelling)
A play by the British author O. Wilde. Published in 1893. Written in French, it was translated into English (1894) by the author's friend A. Douglas. It is based on a story from the Bible. Herodias, Queen of Judea, has a daughter, Salome, from her first marriage. Salome is in love with the prophet Jokanaan, who is held captive by the king, but he rejects her. Salome dances at the king's request and asks for Jokanaan's head as a reward. The king, who had promised to give her anything she wanted, is forced to grant Salome's request. Salome dances wildly with the head and is killed by soldiers under the king's orders. It is famous for its aesthetic perversion and brilliant rhetoric. It premiered in Paris in 1896. It was banned in England until 1931 because of its blasphemous content. The illustrations by A. Beardsley for the English version are famous. It was later adapted into an opera by R. Strauss (1905).

She was the granddaughter of Herod the Great, a Jewish king who lived around the 1st century, and the daughter of Herodias, the second wife of Herod Antipas, a tributary of Galilee. She married her uncle, but later remarried Aristobulus, king of Armenia Minor. This Salome is traditionally considered to be the daughter of Herodias and her first husband Philip (Herod Antipas' half-brother), and is said to have asked King Herod for the head of John the Baptist as a reward for dancing (Matthew 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29). The story of Salome has been a subject of Christian art since early times.
