A general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera family Pentatomidae and the closely related terrestrial Heteroptera. Some species, such as the rice pest black stink bug, are black and have a body shape that resembles that of an animal called a turtle, hence the name. However, there are many different body shapes and they do not necessarily resemble a turtle. "Chinzo" is an old Chinese name for these insects, but the family is now used. Members of the Hemiptera family are about 2-40 mm long, with a broad, ovoid or shield-shaped body. They have a triangular head with a wide space between the compound eyes. They have antennae with 4-5 segments, a 4-segmented proboscis, and many species are herbivorous.

半翅目カメムシ科Pentatomidaeおよび近縁の陸生異翅亜目に属する昆虫の総称。イネ害虫クロカメムシのように黒色で体型が動物のカメに似るものがいるのでこの名がある。しかし，体型は種々あって必ずしもカメに似ない。椿象（ちんぞう）は古い中国での呼称で現在は科が用いられる。　カメムシ科は体長2～40mmくらいで，体は幅広く卵形，または楯形。頭部は三角形で複眼間の幅は広い。触角は4～5節，口吻（こうふん）は4節で多くの種類は植食性である。
