…In early 1369, Henry, Count of Trastámara and illegitimate son of Alfonso XI of Castile, assassinated his father's legitimate successor, Pedro I, and ascended to the throne as Henry II, founding a new dynasty of Trastámara. In 1410, the death of Martin I ended the royal line of the United Kingdom of Aragon, and in 1412, a council of representatives held in Caspe elected Fernando de Antequera (Ferdinand I), a son of King John I of Castile, as the new king. Thus, the United Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon came under the rule of the same dynasty, which was one of the factors that prompted the union of the two countries by the Catholic kings about half a century later. …

A member of the Castilian royal family, he was nicknamed Fernando of Antequera because he recaptured Antequera from the Kingdom of Granada while serving as regency for King John II of Castile. He was chosen as the heir to the throne by the Council of Representatives of the United Kingdom of Aragon after the extinction of the monarchy.
