Teshio Mountains - Teshiosanchi

A mountain range stretching from north to south in northwest Hokkaido. It faces the Kitami Mountains across the Nayoro Basin to the north, and is divided into the Yubari Mountains by the Ishikari River valley to the south. The average elevation is 500-600 meters, and the mountain range is generally gentle, but there are hill-like mountain peaks in places, including the highest peak, Mount Pissiri (1,032 meters). The elevation gradually decreases toward the north, and the area north of the Teshio River valley at the northern end is called the Soya Hills. The main part of the mountain range on the west side faces the Sea of ​​Japan, and coastal terraces are developed. Geology is mainly Cretaceous in the eastern part of the mountain range, and Neogene in the western part, with the Toikambetsu River, Abirashinai River, and Uryu River forming a vertical valley between the two. This is a mountainous region that is mainly made up of national forests, and the Neogene system contains coal seams. Coal mining was once active in the Tenpoku, Tomamae, and Rumoi coalfields. Natural gas is still extracted in Toyotomi Town.

北海道北西部を南北に連なる山地。北は名寄(なよろ)盆地を隔てて北見(きたみ)山地と相対し、南は石狩(いしかり)川の横谷で夕張(ゆうばり)山地と画される。平均標高は500～600メートルで、おおむねなだらかな山容であるが、最高峰のピッシリ山（1032メートル）をはじめ、残丘状の山峰が所々にみられる。北に向かってしだいに高度が低くなり、北端部の天塩川河谷以北は宗谷丘陵(そうやきゅうりょう)とよばれる。山地の西側の主要部は日本海に臨み、海岸段丘が発達している。地質は、山地東部は白亜系を主体とし、西部は新第三紀系からなり、両者の間にトイカンベツ川、安平志内(あびらしない)川、雨竜(うりゅう)川が縦谷を形成する。国有林を主とする山林地帯で、新第三紀系には石炭層が介在し、天北炭田(てんぽくたんでん)、苫前炭田(とままえたんでん)、留萌炭田(るもいたんでん)の炭田ではかつては石炭採掘が盛んであった。豊富町(とよとみちょう)では現在も天然ガスの採取が行われる。
