Citizen Kane

Japanese: 市民ケーン - しみんけーん(英語表記)Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane

American film from 1941. Produced, directed, co-written and starring Orson Welles. As the life of Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), an American newspaper magnate who died leaving behind the words "rosebud," is investigated, the true face of this monstrously successful man emerges. It is eventually revealed that "rosebud" was a phrase inscribed on a sled that Kane loved to use as a child, suggesting the profound human loneliness of this man who wielded power as he pleased. Welles was just 25 years old when this film was shot, and headed a theater company that drew attention as a "child prodigy." This film, said to be based on the life of newspaper magnate W. R. Hearst, was Welles' first feature film and made a big impact with its bold composition that intertwines past time periods and its use of new techniques such as pan-focus photography that aims for a direct expression in a single frame without montage, and is now regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of world cinema. Released in Japan in 1966 (Showa 41).
