Armadillidium vulgare

Japanese: オカダンゴムシ

A species of the Isopoda crustacean family Armadillididae. Often simply referred to as the pillbug. Body length is 10-14 mm, width is about half that. Each body segment curves ventrally and rounds into a sphere. The abdominal appendages have a trachea. The second and third abdominal appendages of the male are modified into mating stingers. Body color is gray to dark brown. Distributed almost worldwide, living under dead leaves and rotting wood. The closely related Armadillidium vulgare lives on the coast.

甲殻類等脚目オカダンゴムシ科の１種。単にダンゴムシと通称されることも多い。体長10〜14mm，幅はその２分の１ぐらい。各体節が腹側に湾曲して球状に丸まる。腹肢は外肢に気管を備える。雄の第２，３腹肢は交尾針に変形。体色は灰色ないし暗褐色。ほぼ全世界に分布し，枯葉や朽ち木などの下に生息する。海岸には近縁のハマダンゴムシがすむ。
