Albergo (English spelling) [Italy]

Albergo (English spelling) [Italy]
A clan association of the city's nobility that existed in Genoa. Its correct name is the "Albergo dei Nobili." It was the same as the "Society of Towers" that existed in other Italian cities around the 12th century, but in Genoa's case, it exerted great influence in city politics and international commerce from the 12th to the 16th centuries. In certain parts of the city, the clans built huge mansions next to each other and controlled the area (albergo means mansion).
