A group of islands scattered along the west coast of Greece, from near the Albanian border to the southern tip of the Peloponnese. The seven main islands are Corfu (Kerkyra), Paxos, Lefkas, Ithaca, Kephalinia, Zakynthos, and Kythira. They produce olive oil and wine, and are also important tourist destinations. In the 14th and 15th centuries they were Venetian, from 1797 to 1799 they were French, and from 1815 to 1864 they were British. ^{Area: 2,307 km2} . Population: 212,984 (2001).
