...A painter from the mid-Edo period. His given name was Koretomi, and his common name was Ichinojo. In addition to Korin, which he began using at the age of 35, he also had other pseudonyms such as Hoshuku, Sekisui, Kansei, Doshou, Seishou, and Jakumei. He was the second son of Ogata Munetomi, a high-class Kyoto kimono merchant. His younger brother was Ogata Kenzan. When his father died in 1687 (Jokyo 4), he inherited almost half of his inheritance, but he spent it all in a dissolute lifestyle, and at around the age of 39, he decided to become a painter.
