In Japan, what are commonly called skinks are included in the genus Eumeces , and six species are found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and the surrounding islands, including the Japanese skink E. latisctatus (illustration), the Okada skink E. okadae in the Izu Islands, the Okinawa skink E. marginatus in the Ryukyu Islands, and the Barbarian skink E. barbouri . These species are typical "lizard-like" and are similar in both morphology and ecology, with slight differences in the appearance and number of body scales depending on the species.
