They speak Aromanian (a dialect of Romanian) and live in northern Greece, southern Albania, and Macedonia, but their numbers are said to range from tens of thousands to as many as 400,000, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly how many there are. They call themselves Arǎmân or Armân. It is linguistically proven that they shared a common ancestor with Romanians, but as the Balkan Peninsula became Slavic or Hellenized from the 6th century onwards, they fled to the mountains and became mainly engaged in sheep farming, maintaining their communities based around clans (falcari) until the early 20th century.
