Gandoko Lake

An artificial lake located in the northern part of Morioka City in central Iwate Prefecture. Iwahora Dam, an irrigation dam built by damming the Tanto River, is Japan's first mixed soil and rock dam and was completed in 1961 (Showa 36) as part of the Kitakami River Specific Area Comprehensive Development. It is 40 meters high, 351 meters long, and has a storage capacity of 65.6 million cubic meters. A siphon crosses the Kitakami River from here to irrigate the wilderness at the foot of Mt. Iwate. The area around the lake is part of the Sotoyama Hayasaka Highlands Prefectural Natural Park, where a family travel village has been established and tourism and recreation development is underway. There is a bus service from Morioka City.

岩手県中央部、盛岡市(もりおかし)の北部にある人造湖。丹藤川(たんとうがわ)をせき止めてつくられた灌漑(かんがい)用の岩洞ダムは、日本で最初の土石混合型ダムで、北上川特定地域総合開発の一環として1961年（昭和36）に完成。堤高40メートル、堤長351メートル、貯水量6560万立方メートル。ここから北上川をサイフォンで横断し、岩手山麓(さんろく)の原野を灌漑する。湖の周辺は外山(そとやま)早坂高原県立自然公園の一部で、家族旅行村が設けられ、観光レクリエーション開発が進められている。盛岡市からバス便がある。
