An artificial lake located in the northern part of Morioka City in central Iwate Prefecture. Iwahora Dam, an irrigation dam built by damming the Tanto River, is Japan's first mixed soil and rock dam and was completed in 1961 (Showa 36) as part of the Kitakami River Specific Area Comprehensive Development. It is 40 meters high, 351 meters long, and has a storage capacity of 65.6 million cubic meters. A siphon crosses the Kitakami River from here to irrigate the wilderness at the foot of Mt. Iwate. The area around the lake is part of the Sotoyama Hayasaka Highlands Prefectural Natural Park, where a family travel village has been established and tourism and recreation development is underway. There is a bus service from Morioka City. [Tadashi Kawamoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
