Kameoka [city] - Kameoka

Japanese: 亀岡[市] - かめおか
Kameoka [city] - Kameoka
A city in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. It occupies the Kameoka Basin, where the Ooi River (Hozu River) flows southeast, and the surrounding mountainous areas. In the center of the basin, there is a post town at the junction of the San'in Road and the Sasayama Kaido, and the central city developed as a castle town called Kameyama after Akechi Mitsuhide's castle was built. The San'in Main Line runs through the city, and it was once a base for rafting on the Hozu River, and lumber was thriving. It is the starting point of the Hozu River boat trip and the Sagano Scenic Railway. With the development of the transportation network, industrialization has progressed, and the population has increased significantly as a commuter town of Kyoto City. There are 16 shrines listed in the Engishiki, of which Izumo Shrine (Izumo Daijingu) and Ogawatsuki Shrine are Meishin Taisha. Shinomura Hachiman Shrine is known as the place where Ashikaga Takauji prayed for victory when he raised his army in 1333. It is home to the Jodo sect's Kokubunji Temple, which inherits the ancient Tanba Kokubunji Temple, and Anao-ji Temple, the 21st temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. The remains of Kameoka (Kameyama) Castle are home to Tenonkyo, the headquarters of Omotokyo. Rice and wheat are grown as secondary crops, and local vegetables and flowers are cultivated, as well as pig and chicken farming. The area is 224.80 km2 . Population: 92,399 (2010).
