Restoring force - Restoring force

Japanese:
Restoring force - Restoring force
Generally, it refers to the force that tries to return an object that has moved from a balanced position to its original position, but it often refers to the force that resists when a ship standing upright on the water is gently tilted, or the force that tries to return the ship to its original position after being tilted. When a ship is stationary, the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy (called the center of buoyancy) are on the same vertical line, and gravity and buoyancy are in balance. If the ship tilts slightly, the center of gravity does not change, but the center of buoyancy moves, and the two are no longer on the same vertical line, and the couple of gravity and buoyancy acts to rotate the ship. In this case, the intersection of the vertical line passing through the center of buoyancy and the centerline of the hull is called the metacenter, and if the center of gravity is below the metacenter, this couple acts as a righting force for the ship. If the center of gravity is high and above the metacenter, this couple tries to tilt the ship even more. The distance between the metacenter and the center of gravity is called the metacenter height, and the magnitude of the restoring force is determined by this. Heavy-headed ships with a small metacenter height have small restoring force, while light-headed ships with a large metacenter height, such as ships with a light top or wide width, have large restoring force.
