Orientalistik (Germany)

A general term for the study of the languages, history, and cultures of the Orient. In Europe and the United States, the Orient is covered in a broad sense, which includes not only the disciplines mentioned below, but also Indian studies, Southeast Asian studies, Mongol studies, Sinology (Chinese studies), Korean studies, and Japanese studies. Oriental studies in Western Europe dates back to the encounter with and acceptance of Islamic culture in the Middle Ages, but it was not until the 19th century that each of the specialized fields was established as a modern academic field. The first International Congress of Near Eastern Studies was held in Paris in 1873, and the Tokyo conference in 1983 was the 31st.

オリエントの言語や歴史，文化を研究する学問の総称。欧米では広義のオリエントを対象としているので，そのなかには後述の諸学のほかに，インド学や東南アジア研究，モンゴル学，シナ学(中国学)，朝鮮学，日本学などまで含まれる。西ヨーロッパのオリエント研究は，中世におけるイスラム文化との出会いとその受容の時期にさかのぼるが，分科した各専門領域が近代的学問として確立するのは19世紀においてである。1873年にはパリにおいて第1回の国際オリエント学会議が開催され，1983年の東京大会は第31回を数える。
