A famous clan in Settsu whose sole duty was to guard the port. It is said that their ancestor was Tamomi no Sukune (Jingu Sessho article in the Nihon Shoki). While serving Settsu Sumiyoshi Shrine (Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City), they led the Amabe clan and mastered navigation techniques. The Tsumori clan is known from the time of Tsumori no Sukune Kunimaro, who traveled to the sea as a member of a Japanese envoy to Tang China. According to the Sumiyoshi genealogy and the genealogy of the Sumiyoshi Shrine priest and his family, Kunimoto, who was active in the latter half of the 11th century, is said to be the founder of the Tsumori clan's revival, and Kunika and Kunihisa appear in historical records as generals of the southern army during the civil war between the Northern and Southern Courts. Many of the successive generations are said to have excelled in waka poetry. The branches spread to Yamashiro, Izumi, Sanuki, Buzen and other places, each of which prospered by being based at key points for water trade.
