The 1821 Etherian uprising and the Wallachian peasant uprising led by Vladimirscu ended Phanariot rule and led to the election of a prince from the local nobility. The Treaty of Akerman, concluded between Russia and the Ottoman Empire in 1826, recognized Moldova's former autonomy, and the Treaty of Adrianople, concluded in 1829 after the Russo-Turkish War, further expanded Moldova's autonomy, effectively freeing it from most of the Ottoman Empire, but making Russia its protector. From 1829 to 1834, Russian troops continued to be stationed in the country, and the liberal General PD Kiselyov governed Wallachia and Moldova.
