Also called "tsuyu". Seasonal rain that appears especially prominently from June to July in the Yangtze River Basin in China to southern Japan. The length of the rainy season varies from year to year, and the dates of its onset and end are not fixed. The beginning of the rainy season in the calendar is the day when the sun passes 80° of the ecliptic longitude (June 11-12). Although it has no particular meteorological significance, the rainy season often begins around this time in areas along the southern coast of Japan. The end of the rainy season usually occurs around mid-July on the southern coast of Japan, and in the Tohoku region in late July. In Hokkaido, the rainy season appears clearly in some years, but not in others. From a meteorological perspective, the rainy season phenomenon corresponds to the rainy season front stagnation along the southern coast. The rainy season front usually appears in the latitude band connecting Taiwan and Iwo Jima around May, and moves northward seasonally, advancing and retreating, and in midsummer it moves north to the direction of Primorsky Krai. Therefore, the rainy season begins and ends earlier in the south. The rainy season in Okinawa is called "natugure". The rainy season in Ogasawara is also at its peak in May. The etymology of the word "rainy season" is said to be from the rain that falls when plums ripen, or from "moist rain," which means mold rain. "Tsuyu" is said to come from dew, or from the fact that things become "bad" due to mold, and since it rains around the fifth month of the lunar calendar, it is also called "May rain."

〈つゆ〉とも。６月から７月にかけて中国の揚子江流域から日本の南部にかけて特に顕著に現れる季節的な雨。年によりその期間に長短があり，入梅，梅雨明けの日付も一定しない。暦の入梅は太陽が黄経80°を通過する日（６月11〜12日）で，特に気象学的意味はないが，日本の南岸の地方ではこのころに梅雨に入ることが多い。梅雨明けは日本の南岸では通常７月中旬ごろ，東北地方で７月下旬。北海道は梅雨がはっきり現れる年とそうでない年がある。梅雨現象は気象学的にみると梅雨前線が南岸沿いに停滞することに対応する。梅雨前線帯は通常，５月ごろ台湾と硫黄島を結ぶ緯度帯に現れ，一進一退しながら季節的に北上し，盛夏季には沿海州方面まで北上する。したがって梅雨は南ほど早く始まり，早く明ける。沖縄の梅雨は〈夏ぐれ〉と呼ばれる。小笠原の梅雨も５月が最盛期。梅雨の語源は梅の実の熟するころの雨，または〈黴雨〉でカビの雨を意味するという。〈つゆ〉は露，あるいはカビなどのため物が〈ついゆ（わるくなる）〉に由来するといわれ，陰暦５月ころの雨なので五月雨(さみだれ)の称もある。
