A medieval city in the state of Karnataka, South India. Its ancient name was Somanāhapura. It is home to the Keśava Temple, built in 1268 or earlier by Somanatha, a high-ranking official of the Hoysala dynasty. This temple is a representative example of the intermediate type of Hindu temple developed by the Hoysala dynasty. It has a square front hall surrounded by three main halls, and the walls are surrounded by a horizontal decorative band of delicate reliefs. In addition to statues of gods and animals, the reliefs that refer to the epic poem, the Mahabharata, are important. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
