A village in Nishimorokata County in western Miyazaki Prefecture. Population 2,786 (1995). It borders Kumamoto Prefecture to the north and Kobayashi City to the west. In the Middle Ages, it was under the control of the Mera clan, who were based in Suki Castle, but since the early modern period it has belonged to the Satsuma Domain. Located in the southern Kyushu mountain range, most of the village area is covered by forests, with national forests splayed across it. The Ayanami River flows southeast through the center of the village, with Kannon Falls and Ayanami Dam in the center. In addition to livestock and sericulture, chestnut and shiitake mushroom cultivation is thriving, and mountain tea is also a specialty of the village. 宮崎県西部,西諸県(にしもろかた)郡の村。人口2786(1995)。北は熊本県,西は小林市に接する。中世は須木城に拠った米良(めら)氏の支配下にあったが,近世以後は薩摩藩領に属した。九州山地南部にあり,村域のほとんどは山林で占められ,国有林が広がる。村の中央を綾南川が南東流し,中央部に観音滝や綾南ダムがある。畜産や養蚕のほか,栗,シイタケの栽培が盛んで,山茶の特産もある。軍谷(いくさだに)峠(587m)を通って小林に通じる国道265号線が唯一の交通路である。
